Chinese drywall is drywall that is manufactured in China and imported by the United States starting in 2001. This drywall is believed to release certain gases like sulfur dioxide (SO2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon disulfide (CS2). The offgasing is believed to be caused by pockets of sulfur ions that react with carbon monoxide as well as humidity and create corrosive compounds. These gases produce a foul odor and damage property including air conditioner, electrical wiring, copper plumbing, appliances and electronics by corroding them and turning them black and powdery. These emissions worsen as temperature and humidity rise. Air Environmental Services (AES) has developed a sampling strategy to determine the presence (or absence) of these gases associated with Chinese drywall. AES collects field data and makes field observations throughout all areas of the facility. Upon completion of the visual inspection AES collects various samples. The samples are then forwarded to an accredited laboratory in order to determine airborne concentrations of sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and carbon disulfide. After receiving lab results, AES generates a report that provides information to the client regarding the airborne concentration of the aforementioned gases associated with the Chinese drywall.
